Patagonia is an American apparel company that found its beginnings in the outdoor clothing marketing. Founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973, the idea for Patagonia was born in Ventura, California after Chouinard saw a gap in the outdoor clothing market. Environmentally conscious, Chouinard saw the damage his gear was doing to the rock faces he was climbing and he set out to create designs that were functional and had low impact on the environment. Patagonia soon gained international popularity among climbers and outdoor adventurers before it eventually became a household name and coveted streetwear brand in recent years. The brand has since expanded to include a range of innovative designs crafted from technical fabrics like lightweight jackets, windproof outerwear, breathable t-shirts, warm heat tech fleeces, and functional accessories. Here at Incu we stock all the latest Patagonia menswear, including casual fleeces and brightly coloured retro-inspired outerwear that will soon become your casualwear go-to.
Yvon Chouinard was an accomplished rock climber who began selling hand forged mountain climbing gear in 1957 through his first outdoor company Chouinard Equipment. In 1965 Chouinard partnered with his friend Tom Frost who helped fine tune the creation of the mountain climbing equipment and expand the business in order to meet the growing demand for the products. After over a decade of manufacturing innovative apparel and accessories for outdoor enthusiasts, Chouinard began experimenting with new fits and fabrics. In 1970 he made his first step towards multi use designs after refashioning rugby shirts from Scotland into climbing t-shirts, a decision that was inspired by the collared design which helped protect the necks of climbers from the chafing of climbing slings, and it was a decision that would catapult Patagonia into a new level of success and demand. Before he knew it Chouinard’s new rugby-style climbing shirts began to sell out, and he started a new fashion trend with his brightly coloured jerseys with heavy duty collars. To keep up with growing demand Yvon ordered jerseys from Umbro in England, and when they sold out, Chouinard began ordering from New Zealand and Argentina. Chouinard saw this best-selling clothing as a way to support his original equipment company, and by 1973, Patagonia opened its first store in the former Hobson meat-packing plant in Ventura, under the name Great Pacific Iron Works. The brand soon expanded further, selling durable rain cagoules and bivouac sacks from Scotland, boiled-wool gloves and mittens from Austria and hand-knit reversible “schizo” hats from Boulder. As the clothing side to Chouinard’s company grew, he and his team decided it needed its own unique name. In 1973 Patagonia was born, a name the team described as one that brings to mind “romantic visions of glaciers tumbling into fjords, jagged windswept peaks, gauchos and condors”. That year Patagonia opened its first store in the former Hobson meat-packing plant in Ventura.
Since their inception Patagonia have spent decades perfecting their product with innovative fabrics, garment-making techniques and sustainable practises. Patagonia now spent decades researching different materials, colours, working environments and environmental ethics to create quality apparel and accessories designed to withstand the elements. Patagonia has expanded its product line to include clothing designed for other sports, such as surfing, hiking, and general outdoor wear. Their offering has also expanded to include the manufacturing of other products such as backpacks, sleeping bags, and camping gear. What started as an exclusive outdoor adventurer brand has since traversed the line into coveted streetwear, as the brand of choice for those seeking comfortable, practical and retro-inspired designs like men’s cotton t-shirts with boldly branded prints, warm hooded fleeces, funnel neck sweatshirts, windproof jackets, and lightweight sweatpants.
Today Patagonia is one of the world's leading environmentally conscious clothing brands with an ethos that promotes sustainable practice and the use of upcycling materials. Beyond creating recycled garments and accessories, Patagonia is committed to teaching and training the next generation of environmental activists with outreach programs and conscious donations to continue their mission in finding solutions to the ongoing environmental crisis. Yvon Chouinard was a founding member of the organisation One Percent for the Planet, which Patagonia donates 1% of its total sales to go towards various environmental protection groups. One Percent for the Planet was created to encourage other businesses to commit 1% of their sales to nonprofit organisations whose purpose is also to focus on sustainability and conservation of the planet and its species.
