Since its inception in Denmark in 2012, Cecilie Copenhagen has traversed the globe with its unique designs. Born from a desire to create stylish pieces without compromising on comfort, the brand’s founder Cecilie Jorgensen has crafted a range of women’s effortless basics featured in the instantly recognisable keffiyeh scarf-inspired print. The idea for Cecilie Copenhagen all started with a night out with nothing to wear. At eighteen years old Cecilie Jorgensen decided to sew together two keffiyeh scarves to make a tunic and after receiving multiple compliments she decided to experiment with other garment making. As a fashion student at the time at the prestigious Copenhagen’s prestigious Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Jorgensen took the time to finish her degree and to experiment with different design techniques before creating her label. What started out as Jorgensen working from the back of her mother’s interior store turned into the establishment of the first Cecilie Copenhagen boutique which in the first months of opening saw lines of women down the stairs of the building and along the street, waiting to get their Cecilie Copenhagen garments. Heavily inspired by the artisanal quality of traditional hand-loomed keffiyeh scarves of the Middle East, Jorgensen reworked the design with contemporary Scandinavian style codes of simplicity and functionality. The original design that started the brand’s success is now a staple in each season’s collection known as the Shirt-O. Cecilie Copenhagen was the true definition of an overnight success, and after being inundated with requests for more designs, the brand shot to popularity across Europe and soon the rest of the world. Today Cecilie Copenhagen designs are flaunted by fashion fans, bloggers, and models all around the world, and it’s become the go-to brand for it-girls whose style blends comfort and sartorial appeal.
While her start may have been accidental, Jorgensen has credited her success to some careful business decisions which positioned her brand to be a luxury take on casualwear, and soon hundreds of retailers globally were offering to purchase her collections. Cecilie Copenhagen became available exclusively through carefully selected retailers whose values, ethos and style were high end with an edge. This careful vetting and selection has proven to be hugely successful for the Danish brand whose laidback tops, tunics, dresses and skirts are constantly sold out, and eight years on the brand’s popularity shows no signs of slowing down. It’s little surprise, given the Scandinavian label’s trajectory came at a time where fashion’s collective consciousness was rejecting overly designed pieces in favour of less fuss. While her silhouette is true to distinctly minimal Scandinavian sensibilities, the recognisable print and bold colour are a welcome departure.
The characteristic keffiyeh scarf is a combination of three patterns, each symbolising different aspects from the region. The olive leaves, or better recognised as the zig zag pattern, represent strength, resilience and perseverance. The fishnet pattern represents an affinity towards the sailors and the connection with the Mediterranean Sea, while the bold stripe pattern represents trade routes, symbolising a long history of merchants, travel and cultural exchange.
The keffiyeh scarf has a long and enduring history dating back to Sumerians and Babylonians in Mesopotamia. It is also known as a shemagh scarf, Arab scarf, Palestinian hatta, yamegh and igal. Wearing the shemagh has held many different meanings and uses over time, also depending on location and culture. The symbolic meaning, colour, and keffiyeh style vary from one country to another and even from one region to another. Cecilie Copenhagen has drawn inspiration from the Middle Eastern keffiyeh pattern and the cultural value it has for people of the region and with historial, cultural, and familial ties to the Middle East. Cecilie Copenhagen has thoughtfully designed collections which draw inspiration from the traditional keffiyeh scarves with the same hand-loomed designs and lightweight cotton textures, timeless prints and geometric patterns blended with a Scandinavian tradition for easy to wear designs.
Cecilie Copenhagen demonstrates a fusing of bohemian style with a sartorial sensibility to craft superior pieces designed to be worn with ease. Statement patterns are offset by relaxed cuts which exude an air of contemporary simplicity that is easily adaptable to the Australian lifestyle. Airy shift dresses sit alongside boxy shell tops and V-necked tees – all woven in gauzy pure cotton. Three-quarter sleeve blouses feature tasselled trims and folk-inspired blouson sleeves. Sweeping maxi dresses are cinched at the waist with self-tie belts while shorts and skirts feature shirred waistbands and crinkle-textured weaves ideal for weekends spent in the sun. Designed to elevate your mix and match game, the range easily partners with any shade of denim for instant holiday-ready appeal. Take note of a bold palette inspired by nature; earthy rust red, citrus yellow, clear sky blue and juicy green apple hues.
