WOMENS CONTENT: Founded in 1969 by Japanese designer and visionary Rei Kawakubo, Comme des Garçons has become one of the most internationally coveted and loved labels in fashion, known for its avant garde aesthetic and distinct sense of playful humour. Meaning ‘like boys’ in French, Comme des Garçons has consistently delivered the unexpected, with an experimental eye and a knack for detail. Now an international mainstay, Comme des Garçons design an array of premium ready-to-wear apparel and accessories, hallmarked by bold prints against clean-lined silhouettes and quality fabrics.
Rei Kawakubo first conceived the idea of Comme des Garçons in Tokyo, and debuted her first show in Paris in 1981 Kawakubo’s first collection stirred up the fashion industry and challenged the status quo of the time with a dramatic line of men’s and women’s clothing that pushed the boundaries of contemporary design with a distinctive style. Kawakubo’s style is characterised by an unmistakable play on proportions through experimental shapes and silhouettes, bold prints, colours, and a truly singular way of approaching design. Comme des Garçons quickly rushed onto the radar of the fashion community, with an immediate success in both commercial and couture avenues. Known for her heavy use of black and distressed detailing, Kawakubo’s collections were often associated with a resurgence of punk influenced style. Despite facing criticism by the fashion elite and glossy magazines throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Comme des Garçons continued on an upward trajectory of success following the simmering underground following of each season’s collections. By 2004, Kawakubo expanded Comme des Garçons to include the diffusion labels Homme des Garçons Deux and Comme des Garçons Shirt. These two expansions of the design house marked Kawabuo’s move to create a multifaceted empire with a mix of distinct styles under the one umbrella.
The late 90s became a period when Comme des Garçons positioned itself to be one of the great design houses of contemporary fashion with collections that both explored the abstract and brought a distinct artfulness to couture and ready to wear. Comme des Garçons crafted collections that experimented with shapes, drew the eye to unfamiliar silhouettes of the feminine form, and erred on the freakish. Kawakubo’s eye for detail and an unmistakable ability to blend art and fashion saw the designer collaborate on a range of arts and cultural projects across the globe. One such collaboration was between Kawakubo and the New York-based choreographer Merce Cunningham, in a stunning collection called ‘Scenario.’ This particular collection showcased Kawakubo’s uncanny ability to skillfully blend markers of traditional menswear tailoring with feminine elements like corsets and floral printed fabrics. Comme des Garçons has since collaborated with a long list of artists, designers, retailers, and musicians. One of the most successful partnerships was forged between Comme des Garçons and Junya Watanabe, whose collection became a mainstay collaboration under the Comme des Garçons family. Not only known for experimental collaborations, but also for forging her own path in design and business alike, Kawakubo ventured to the retail space with the opening of Dover Street Market - a concept store which stocked each of the Comme des Garçons brands as well as other international labels. Dover Street Market has since expanded to locations in Tokyo, Osaka, London, New York, and more.
