Apiece Apart is a New York City-based fashion brand which crafts collections of women’s clothing that is designed to be as versatile as the woman wearing them. Apiece Apart was built on the brand mantra of “Go Anywhere, Do Anything”, and it’s a philosophy that Laura Cramer and Starr Hout, the label’s founders and designers, have abided by in the decade since launching their now iconic brand. Laura Cramer and Starr Hout were born one day apart, and they’re self-described kindred spirits who are so close that they seem to share the same brain. The pair met during their senior year at the prestigious NYU while they were completing a master’s computer programming course. Laura worked as a graphic designer and art director specialising in branding, while Starr began working in art before moving to fashion where she worked as a stylist until the pair joined forces to create their brand. Laura and Starr began taking yearly birthday trips together after graduating from college and it was on one of these trips through West Texas that they found inspiration for the foundation that would become Apiece Apart. While travelling through Marfa, Texas, the ideas for their now cult-followed brand began to take shape as the two designers found inspiration in the vast landscape and the art they saw along the way, which would later have an enormous influence on their aesthetic.

Following their trip away, Laura and Starr began working on bringing the idea for their first collection to life. The first designs were simple, streamlined and comfortable and they were created with an air of ease and imaginations of travel. Laura and Starr designed their first collection by faxing drawings back and forth to each other while working at their day jobs. Laura soon relocated back to New York to join forces full time with Starr, and the duo put the finishing touches on what would become their very first Apiece Apart collection. In 2008 the women’s clothing label officially launched, and within a matter of seasons it was being coveted by celebrities, style influencers and a wide variety of women who appreciate the thoughtful nature of the design. Apiece Apart is now stocked at over 200 online clothing retailers and brick and mortar stores globally, and they’ve developed a fierce following of fashion fans.

While the initial Apiece Apart seasons were displays of monochromatic designs and minimal markers, today the brand is known for a blending of bold prints, polychromatic palettes, and sweeping silhouettes. Early seasons were defined by an ethos of simplicity and restraint, but the identity of the brand has transformed to be a celebration of shapes, colours and a romantic femininity. Once a basics only brand, Apiece Apart has expanded to include versatile eveningwear, work to weekend styles and runway ready looks. New hallmarks of the brand are ruffles, pleated textures, playful proportions and a subtle playfulness blended with contemporary expressions. Each season is known for a fluid versatility with designs that can transcend seasons and style trends, from lightweight blouses that pair perfectly with tapered trousers to mid-length pleated skirts, oversized t-shirts, lightweight silk maxi dresses, heavyweight cotton canvas wide-leg pants, and soft knitted jumpers.
