In the spirit of keeping connected even while we’re apart, we caught up with Bek, our very own eCommerce Shoot and Content Coordinator, to chat about what’s on her wishlist, her hidden talents, and the local businesses she’s supporting right now.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m the E-Commerce Shoot and Content Coordinator. Before Incu I was working in retail whilst completing my Honours degree in Fashion and Textiles at UTS. I’m still recovering from the sleepless nights and overall trauma of Uni. This degree was very assignment based so it took the pleasure out of drawing and sewing a bit when it coincided with criticism and deadlines. It's so nice to be able to create again without any added pressure! Recently I’ve been drawing tiny graphite portraits of my closest friends, and I’ve reacquainted with my sewing machine - I apologised for the things I said to her under the heat of uni and I made myself a dress, so we’re taking it slow.

What’s something you like to work on outside of work?

I do some commission work, mainly for my close friends, whether this be drawings, or tailoring or making some garments. My graduating collection was Menswear, so I’ve been brushing up on my womenswear make. I’ve set my mannequin to my dimensions (might need to loosen them post lockdown) with the intentions of making myself a new wardrobe.

What’s a hidden talent you have?

Oooo, umm. I know every word to the Devil Wears Prada?  That’d more sad than talented

If you had to list your top 10 favourite films/ books/ albums, what would they be?

Films:

- American Beauty - The controversy around Kevin Spacey aside, this is my favourite film ever ever

- I guess I have to say the Devil Wears Prada for reasons above/comfort reasons

- Django Unchained

- Good Fellas

- Forgetting Sara Marshall - a classic go-to

Books:

I don’t have a huge attention span when it comes to books, so this list is a bit scarce:

- A Little Life - Hanya Yanagihara - Don’t read the end of this on a beach by yourself unless you want to be sobbing into the sand with strangers asking if you’re ok

- The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt - I’m still reading this one, but I’m hooked so far

- Everything I Know About Love - Dolly Alderton - A rollercoaster of emotions and important life lessons that I continue to refer back to

Albums:

- Not Waving, But Drowning - Loyle Carner

- Channel Orange/Blonde - Frank Ocean

- Fine Line - Harry Styles

- Ugh, those feels again - Snoh Aalegra

- Roy Pablo - Boy Pablo

What are some local businesses you’d like to support right now?

@berkelo.au For genuinely the best bread I have ever had. If you haven’t had their Lemon Myrtle Sourdough then spank yourself and go buy it.

@thefabricstore in Surry Hills. They have everything. You. Need. To. Make. Anything.

Fratelli's Wood Fired Pizza in Cremorne, you’ll think someone kidnapped you and took you to Italy

@blooms_by_victoria My beautiful Mum has made her floristry dreams a reality and she damn good at it.

What are you grateful for right now?

The good health of my family and all of my friends. The devastation of Corona aside - we’ve all been given a rare chance to stop, reflect and appreciate - and I’m feeling very loved and lucky.

Lastly, what are some of your favourite picks at Incu right now?

Acne has always been a benchmark brand in regards to silhouettes, choice of textiles and colour use so there is no surprise it makes up half of my top picks. For someone who wears a lot of black, my selections are also pretty conspicuous. My new year's resolution was to wear more colour so I guess my choices are a reflection of my intentions! I mean, A rhinestone encrusted shopping bag? Well done Alexander Wang, I’ll take 5.
